No matter if you're just getting started with refinishing or have been doing it your whole life, it's always a good idea to take a step back and get back to the basics. Below we dive into the four different layers that are used in the automotive painting process: E-coat, Primer, Basecoat, & Clearcoat.

A typical automotive coating system consists of four layers as shown in Fig. 1, namely the e-coat, the primer or filler, the basecoat and the clearcoat, and the latter two-layers are combined into the topcoat.

Automotive paint is typically applied in four to five layers (or more) depending on the auto manufacturer and car color. A car's paint job generally includes an e-coat, primer, base coat, and clear coat on a metal substrate. Some colors have an additional paint layer (mica).

Any automotive paint (automotive enamel) consists of a pigment, a binder, a filming agent, a filler, additives, a special pigment and a solvent: A pigment is a powdery element of paint that is responsible for its tone and color.

In most situations, a good rule of thumb is to use a primer plus two coats of paint. If you use this rule, you may do one more coat than needed but this won't hurt the final product.

The base coat, aka the color coat, determines the vehicles final color. Depending on the manufacturers process, anywhere from 2-3 layers of base coat are applied to vehicles.

The thickness of the paint you see on your car is measured in microns (µm), 1 micron is equivalent to one thousandth of a millimetre (1/1000mm). It's comprised of three layers: Primer, Base Colour Coat and Clear Coat (lacquer).

The first layer applied to a car's body is the primer layer. This layer prepares the surface for the topcoat, ensures the paint adheres well, and helps to prevent rust. The primer layer is typically a neutral color, like gray or black, and helps to hide any imperfections on the body.

As a quick reference, average total paint thickness on contemporary OEM (factory) vehicles ranges between 95-125 microns (~3.7-4.3 mils) thick. The clear coat paint layer generally accounts for ~40% of the general thickness of automotive paint systems.

Level 3: If you see an white or grey color beneath the paint, the finish is likely scratched all the way into the primer. These scratches can't be removed without repainting, but thankfully you shouldn't have to worry about rusting quite yet. Just be sure to cover the scratch with touch-up paint to protect.

Of the vast majority, automotive coatings are composite polymer films with a multilayer structure of clearcoat, basecoat, primer, electro coat, etc., which mainly provide vehicles with brilliant color and a glossy appearance, ref.

Regarding clear coating, wait for the paint to dry completely, which can take anywhere from 24-48 hours depending on the paint and environmental conditions. Apply 2-3 coats of clear coat, allowing 10-15 minutes of drying time between each coat.

Most paints consist of the same basic components: pigments, binders, liquids and additives. Each component serves a role in determining the quality of the paint as well as its performance both during and after application.

In most cars, there are only two layers, starting with the coloured 'base coat' at the bottom, and then topped with a 'clear coat'. With a tri-stage paint, however, there is an additional, thinly-applied 'mid coat' layer in between the base coat beneath it, and a clear coat up top.

A topcoat layer and two or three ceramic coating layers are usually required. UV (ultraviolet) light protection is provided as standard. A ceramic coat layer, when applied correctly to a car's paint, can provide complete coverage in just two coats. Two ceramic coating layers plus a top coat layer are usually required.
