How much illumination do I need?
As a handy rule of thumb, a sitting room or bedroom will generally require around 10-20 lumens per square foot, while a bathroom or kitchen will need a stronger level of lighting, at around 70-80 lumens per square foot. To work out the lumens you need, simply multiply the square footage of the room by this figure.
Multiply the room square footage by the footcandle requirement. For example, a 100 square-foot living room, which needs 20 foot-candles, will need 2,000 lumens. A 100 square-foot dining room, which needs 40 foot-candles, will require 4,000 lumens.
Living rooms
A lux level of 100 – 150 is recommended. Living rooms require a relaxed ambiance and the flexibility to adjust lighting levels. Ideally, illumination should be set between 100 – 150 lux with the flexibility to be reduced to 60 lux.
Studies and home offices require good levels of lighting, with between 400 and 500 lux for task lighting on desks. If more intricate work is being undertaken, we recommend 750 lux. In kitchens, the detailed tasks being carried out require high levels of lighting, particularly because of the use of sharp tools.
To determine the needed lumens, you will need to multiply your room square footage by your room foot-candle requirement. For example, a 100 square foot living room, which needs 10-20 foot-candles, will need 1,000-2,000 lumens. A 100 square foot dining room, which needs 30-40 foot-candles, will need 3,000-4,000 lumens.
For an average 12′ x 12′ bedroom, you would need around 4,000 lumens of light.
So, 100 lumens would be like having 100 candles all burning at once from a distance of one foot away. In terms of general lighting, 100 lumens is pretty low. For example, a standard 60-watt incandescent light bulb produces about 800 lumens of light.
For most home and office work, 30–50 footcandles of illumination is sufficient. For detailed work, 200 footcandles of illumination or more allows more accuracy and less eyestrain.
A standard illuminant is a theoretical source of visible light with a spectral power distribution that is published. Standard illuminants provide a basis for comparing images or colors recorded under different lighting.
A 100-square-foot dining room, which needs 30-40 foot-candles, will need 3,000-4,000 lumens. For the average space of 250 square feet, you'll need roughly 5,000 lumens as your primary light source (20 lumens x 250 square feet).
How many recessed lights in a 12x12 room?
How Many Recessed Lights? In general, a 12x12 kitchen will use a minimum of three to a maximum of nine recessed lights to illuminate the needed area. Exact lighting needs will vary, so keep your kitchen's layout in mind when deciding the number of lights you need for your unique space.
Generally, we recommend around 50-75 lumens per square foot in a bathroom. For example, a small bathroom that is 5 feet by 8 feet (40 square feet) would require 2,000-3,000 lumens (50-75 lumens per square foot). Remember that the type of lighting fixtures and bulbs you use will also affect the amount of light output.
Multipurpose spaces will need a projector between 2,000 and 4,000 lumens. To project a 100-inch to 120-inch screen without ambient lighting, you'll need 1,500 to 2,000 lumens. To project a 100-inch to 120-inch screen with ambient or bright lights, a minimum of 3,000 lumens is required.
A 1000 lumen flashlight is quite bright and, depending on the lens or reflector design, powerful enough to reach a distance of 200 meters or more. This type of flashlight allows you to see objects from a far distance.

For example, a porch light may require 800-1000 lumens, while a floodlight may need 2000-3000 lumens. For pathway lighting, 100-200 lumens per light are sufficient.
For example, a traditional 60-watt incandescent bulb produces about 800 lumens of light. By comparison, you can find an LED (light-emitting diode) bulb that produces that same 800 lumens but uses only about 9 watts.
Typically, 450 lumens are sufficient for reading, writing, or general work, but the 500 number holds true as a minimum. For more intricate tasks, 800 to 1100 lumens may be necessary. To achieve office lighting of 300 lux, an LED lamp should be at least 600 lumens.

How many lumens does a phone flashlight have?
The flashlight on your phone is about 40 - 50 lumens. A phone flashlight has a diffused beam, good for illuminating small areas close by. A dedicated flashlight is recommended for most outdoor activities for the brightness, distance, and runtime.
