Social Security is a federal government program that provides monthly income to a wide range of Americans, including retirees, disabled people, and their eligible dependents. In 2023, more than 71 Million Americans received social security benefits.
But social security payment schedules aren’t always easy to find, which can be frustrating. Especially if you’re waiting for your funds to be deposited. The exact date your social security is paid can depend on various factors, such as your birthday. To work out what dates your social security payment will be paid in 2024, we’ve pulled together this helpful guide.
The social security dates to be aware of in 2024
SSI (Supplemental Security Income) benefits
SSI payments are paid on the first day of each month. However, if the 1st falls on a weekend, then the payment will be issued on the Friday before.
RSDI (Retirement, Survivors and Disability) or ‘SSA’
The date your RSDI payment, also known as the SSA payment, will arrive will depend on the date of birth of the person receiving payment. You can work out the exact day you’ll receive your monthly social security payments based on this social security payment schedule:
- If your birthday falls on the 1st-10th of the month, you’ll be paid on the second Wednesday of each month.
- If your birthday falls on the 11th-20th of the month, you’ll be paid on the third Wednesday of each month.
- If your birthday falls on the 21st-31st of the month, you’ll be paid on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
How much is the average social security payment?
SSI payment amounts increase in line with the cost-of-living crisis adjustments that apply to social security benefits. As of January 2024, the social security payment is set to increase by 3.2 percent. The maximum monthly amount for 2024 can be found in the table below:
Recipient | Monthly amount for 2024 |

What time does a social security direct deposit occur?
Usually, social security checks arrive by midnight the day before the payment is due. So, if your deposit is due on Wednesday 13th March, it should be in your account when you check at midnight on Tuesday 12th.
However, as with all bank transfers and money sending, there can be delays. So, it’s advised that you wait three business days before contacting social security about a missed payment.

What if I don’t receive my social security check?
Your social security payment should arrive in your account by midnight, the day before the payment is due. However, as with all bank transfers, there may be slight delays. If you don’t receive your social security check within three business days, you can report it to the Social Security Administration by calling 1-800-722-1213, or by reaching out to your local social security office.
How can I receive my social security payment?
There are several ways you can receive your social security payment.
1. By direct deposit
If you have a checking account, you can receive your social security payment by direct deposit every month. Alternatively, if you prefer to receive your check in the mail, there are different options for how to cash it.
2. Cash or deposit your check at the bank
Cash or deposit your social security check at your local bank, or cash your social security check via a third-party service like Money Services within the Kroger Family of Stores.
You’ll just need your check and a valid form of ID to prove it’s yours. Named recipients must be present for a check to be cashed.
3. Deposit your check onto a prepaid card
Your social security check can also be directly deposited onto a prepaid credit card, which you can top up with more funds later. Reloading your prepaid credit card at Money Services is a great way to limit your spending and stick to a budget, as you can use it to shop anywhere.
And when the time comes to cash your social security check, head to your local Money Services to get your funds quickly – just make sure you bring along your ID.
