Looking To Get Your Cowboy On?

Sure, you can buy the ubiquitous Jackson Hole T-shirt as a souvenir of your trip here (and you should!), but a more authentic keepsake to bring back home that truly screams “Wyoming” would be a pair of cowboy boots—or hat, belt or other Western accessory.

How to buy boots: When choosing cowboy boots, remember that they should reflect your personality. You should also consider what you intend to wear them for: dancing, casual wear, working (as in with horses or cattle, on a farm, etc., not in an office), or on dressy occasions. For instance, if you’re going to a dude ranch, you'll need an economical pair of boots, not a fancy, expensive pair.Price is another consideration: Boots can range in cost from $200 to more than $2,000.

Hats: You don’t want to purchase a cowboy hat that will just get smooshed and ruined when or if you pack it in your suitcase. If you’ve flown here, consider buying a wool, crushable hat (it will say “crushable” on the inside) as it is easily packable. A harder, stiffer felt hat or a straw one, however, can be placed under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartment. Sizing is an important consideration, too, so ask the salesperson to help you select the best fitting hat.

How not to cowboy: Avoid the rhinestones head-to-toe look. And remember that your blue jeans need to “stack” on your boots. In other words, if the boots are going under the jeans, the pants need to be long, not short. If you can see or almost see skin between the boot and your jeans, it’s not the Wyoming way.
