The passport book and card have many security features to prevent successful counterfeiting. You should only report your valid U.S. passport lost or stolen if the physical document is lost or stolen. Once you report a U.S. passport lost or stolen, it is no longer valid and you cannot use it for international travel.

A lost or stolen passport may be reported online with the U.S. Department of State or by contacting the U.S. Department of State at 1-877-487-2778. A Statement Regarding Lost or Stolen Passport, Form DS-64 may also be submitted along with an application for a new passport, Form DS-11.

If you reported your passport lost or stolen, it is no longer valid for international travel. A foreign country may deny your entry if you try to use that passport. Or you might not be allowed to leave if you are already abroad.

If your passport was lost or stolen, you are advised to file a police report. A fee of $135 (or $105 in the case of an applicant under age 16) will be payable at the time you visit the Consular Section, which can be paid in cash U.S. dollars, the cash equivalent in Euro, or with certain credit cards.

Your statement must detail why the previous U.S. passport cannot be presented. The information you provide on the DS-64, Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen Passport, will be placed into our Consular Lost or Stolen Passport System. This system is designed to prevent the misuse of your lost or stolen U.S. passport.

But when a passport is combined with more of your personally identifiable information (PII) — such as your name or address — this can give scammers enough data to target you with sophisticated identity theft scams, access your online accounts, or even create fake IDs in your name.

It should be noted that just attempting to use a passport fraudulently violates federal law. If convicted of passport fraud, you could face up to ten years in federal prison. If prosecutors can prove the passport was used to further a drug trafficking offense, then you could be facing 20 years in prison.

Whether you need a passport as a U.S. citizen to travel to or from a U.S. territory or Freely Associated State depends on your destination. U.S. citizens do not need a passport to travel between the U.S. and these territories: Guam. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

If your flight is imminent, you can apply for an urgent or emergency passport. If you have an upcoming international flight within 72 hours, you may be able to get a replacement passport in time. The process and timeline depend on where you are when you've lost your passport.

If you are age 16 or older, your passport is valid for 10 years. Your child's passport (age 0-15) is valid for 5 years. Some countries require that your passport have at least six months of validity beyond the dates of your trip. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met.

It may be issued on the spot or within two days. Note: Emergency U.S. passports are not valid for travel through many countries, including France, Belgium, Holland and the Arab Emirates.
