Grab your grandmas and grandpas, nanas and pop-pops, meemaws and peepaws, because it's all about them on Wednesday, Aug. 21.
Aug. 21 marks National Senior Citizens Day, and the 36th year since President Ronald Reagan issued the proclamation declaring the day in 1988.
"National Senior Citizens Day recognizes the achievements of the more mature representatives of our nation," the National Day Calendar website states. "The day provides an opportunity to show our appreciation for their dedication, accomplishments, and services they give throughout their lives."
In observance of the holiday, here are some things to do, discounts and services to take advantage of as a senior citizen.
The Village of Wellington's Senior Citizens Day event
The Village of Wellington Senior services celebrates National Senior Citizens Day every year with a special event for Wellington residents 50 and older. Hosted in the Grande Ballroom of the Wellington Community Center, the event will feature live entertainment, a free lunch and more.
Wellington senior residents can register via the activity registration page. The event is from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Wellington Community Center. 12150 Forest Hill Blvd, Wellington. The Village of Wellington has also partnered with Freebee to offer a free, door-to-door shuttle for residents over 55.
"Step In Friday" at Kofi's Not so Wine and Wifi Bar
Kofi's Not so Wine and Wifi Bar wants to see you start your Friday mornings on the dance floor. Every Friday at 11 a.m., the bar is hosting a "Step In Friday" line dancing party. On Friday nights from 5:30-8 p.m., seniors can receive 20% off menu items.
Tickets are free and can be found here. The event takes place at 1005 President Barack Obama Highway, Riviera Beach.
Tai chi classes at Norton Art Museum
The Norton Museum of Art offers free tai chi classes on Thursdays for the months of June, July and August.
The classes, which are from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., are led by Juying Janowsky, a certified tai chi instructor from Liuzhou City, China. Students of all skill levels are welcome. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and sneakers or other supportive footwear. It is also recommended to bring water and a cellphone or camera to record movements for at-home practice.
The program takes place on the Museum’s North Lawn at Jefferson Road and South Olive Avenue.
Observe National Senior Citizens Day with Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches
The Meals On Wheels of the Palm Beaches delivers nutritious meals and carries out wellness checks for seniors 65 years old and older who are entirely or primarily homebound in Palm Beach County. Senior discounts and deals around, near Palm Beach County
Shopping deals at Kohl's, Ross, Walgreens
- Kohl's: Customers ages 60 and older can receive a 15% discount on qualifying purchases every Wednesday in stores. Identification needed to redeem coupon.
- Ross: Ross' 55+ Tuesday Discount program offers 10% off purchases made on Tuesdays for customers 55 years of age or older. Eligible customers must notify the associate at time of purchase and may be required to provide an ID to verify age.
- Walgreens: On the first Tuesday of each month, it is Seniors Day at Walgreens. Customers 55 and older can take advantage of exclusive senior savings.Proof of age may be required.
Deals on entertainment: AMC Theatres, Boca Raton Museum of Art, Marlins baseball tickets
- AMC Theatres: Every day before 4 p.m., movie tickets are 25% off the evening base ticket prices. Seniors 60 years old or older can buy tickets at discounted senior prices.
- Boca Raton Museum of Art: General admission tickets are free for August and September. Tickets include an hour-long, docent-led tour offered daily at 2 p.m. Usually, tickets are $12 for seniors 65 and older.
- Marlins Senior Days: Presented by Faith Healthcare, seniors 65 years old and older can receive two complimentary tickets for select Marlins games. Fans can visit the North Ticket Office with an identification card and then enter through the Third Base Dugout Club Entrance. The next select game is Thursday, Sept. 5, at 6:40 p.m. against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Palm Tran and Tri-Rail discount rides, tickets
- Palm Tran: Seniors ages 65 and older can ride Palm Tran buses at half-fare on a single-trip cash fare and a reduced fareon all QUIK Passes and select Paradise Pass limited-use tickets with a valid driver’s license or Florida State ID card.
- Tri-Rail: With a valid driver’s license, birth certificate, Medicare card and/or photo ID with birth date, seniors ages 65 and older can obtain a Discounted Fare EASY Card for a $2 charge. The card provides a 50% discount on one-way, round-trip, and monthly passes or can be loaded with cash value to have the cost of a discounted one-way pass deducted each trip. Passengers must prequalify and take eligibility forms to a ticket kiosk with a photo station to obtain the card with their photo or request it online.
